Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Vent Sanitizing: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Guardsman-compatible vent sanitizing systems in Dallas, with most replacements running between $240 and $430 installed, depending on your duct layout and which sanitizer model you need. We keep several Guardsman replacement units and bulbs on the truck, so we can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most Dallas homeowners discover the problem the hard way: the sanitizer stops humming, the indicator light goes dark, or they start noticing that stale smell returning to the vents. Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman has put out a few different vent sanitizing units over the years, and the mounting footprint changed between generations. The early units, the ones you’ll find in Dallas houses built before 2010, used a magnetic strip mount that stuck to the inside of the supply plenum. The newer Guardsman A-series switched to a threaded nipple mount that requires a drilled pilot hole in the duct wall. The part number is printed on a silver label near the base of the housing, and if the label’s faded past reading, the unit’s width is the reliable tell: the A-series is 2¼ inches wide, while the older M-series is 2⅞ inches. If you can’t tell, text us a photo and we’ll identify it before we roll the truck. That saves you a trip fee on a part we might not be able to match to your duct.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Guardsman-branded bulbs run about 30% more than spec-equivalent replacements, and in Dallas’ humid season, both burn at effectively the same rate. The difference is in the ballast. The OEM Guardsman ballast is potted, which matters in unconditioned attics where summer heat hits 140°F. The cheap imports aren’t, and they fail there. Our position is plain: we’ll install whichever you choose, but we quote the OEM as the default because Garland and Lake Highlands attics are brutal on electronics.

A note on our status: Linden Air Duct Dallas is an independent provider. We’re not affiliated with Guardsman, but we work with their equipment alongside other air-quality brands we stock for, including Lennox, Trane, and Carrier.

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • The indicator light is off or flickering. On most Guardsman units, a dead or flickering LED means the UV bulb has outlived its lifespan or the ballast is struggling to start it. In Dallas we see flicker more often in spring, when power surges from storm season have already stressed the ballast.
  • A faint stale return to the vents. The sanitizer masks or neutralizes what grows on the coil and duct walls; when it stops working, that specific smell starts coming back within about two weeks. If you’re in an older ranch-style house out toward Lake Highlands with decades-old flex duct, that return can be fast and strong.
  • The bulb glass looks blackened or cloudy at one end. Normal wear for a UV-C bulb near the end of its life. If the darkening is on the base end, the bulb’s been running too hot, often because the airflow across it has changed, usually a filter restriction.
  • A soft buzzing sound. That’s a failing ballast. Some homeowners mistake it for a loose duct panel. If the buzz is intermittent and gets worse after the AC kicks on, it’s the sanitizer, not the blower.
  • The housing has yellowed or cracked. UV exposure breaks down plastic over time. A cracked housing means dead air is passing through the sanitizer chamber instead of past the bulb, and the bulb can overheat. We replace the housing, not just the bulb, when we see this.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, a complete Guardsman vent sanitizing replacement runs from $240 to $430 with installation. The spread is driven by three things: which series you have, whether we’re reusing your existing wiring or running a new low-voltage line, and whether the bulb alone is serviceable or the housing needs full replacement. Here’s how it breaks down:

Service Typical Dallas Range
Bulb replacement only (OEM, installed) $90 – $130
Full unit replacement, new M-series (fits older ducts) $240 – $310
Full unit replacement, new A-series (threaded mount) $280 – $380
Housing replacement plus new ballast and bulb $350 – $430

Every quote is a written price before any work begins. No per-vent pricing, no surprise line items. And every replacement is covered by our 365-day Done Right Promise: if the work’s not right, we make it right, and if a covered part fails within the year, we come back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can absolutely check the indicator light, listen for the buzz, and read the label to get us the right part number before we arrive. That saves both of us time. What we don’t recommend is opening the duct and pulling the unit yourself. The UV-C bulb in a Guardsman sanitizer is not a normal light bulb. If it’s still energized enough to fire, even weakly, you don’t want bare skin or eyes near it. There’s also line voltage at the ballast in older installs, and in a Dallas attic in July, a rushed job with a metal duct panel open is exactly how people get hurt. If you’ve already pulled the unit, that’s fine, just set it aside and don’t handle the bulb glass with bare hands. Call (361) 309-3153 and we’ll bring the replacement and take it from there. If I wouldn’t leave it in my own system, I’m not leaving it in yours.
